The African Water Facility (AWF) is open to receiving water or sanitation project proposals and applications for possible funding from all African Regional Member Countries (RMCs), Regional Organizations, River Basin Organizations, civil society organizations, multilateral institutions and partners.

The project submissions received will be screened and evaluated for possible inclusion in the AWF rolling project pipeline for funding over the coming years.

To be eligible for funding, proposed activities must typically be aligned to one or more of the following strategic pillars of the Revised 2017 – 2025 AWF Strategy:

  • Preparation of project feasibility studies and detailed engineering designs for the development of water supply and sanitation related infrastructure in rural and urban areas.
  • Catalytic investments aimed at promoting sustainable innovative approaches on water supply and sanitation development in both rural and urban areas.
  • Creation of an enabling environment for the development and management of water resources, infrastructure, and services,  activities related to water governance, knowledge management, capacity building and training.

The proposed initiatives must clearly portray how climate change, social and gender equity and environmental protection will be addressed. In addition, projects in countries with high levels of fragility will be given a priority.

All received applications, will be subjected to a vigorous screening exercise for eligibility, and evaluation to assess alignment with the priority areas of the AWF Strategy to facilitate selection of successful projects into the pipeline. Projects included in the AWF project pipeline will be considered for possible inclusion in the AWF Annual Work Programme based on a prioritization exercise. Key considerations for awarding grant financing to successful projects will in addition include the following criteria:

  • Political commitment of the beneficiary country/ institution including allocation of resources for co-financing.
  • Project readiness including availability of enabling environment, institutional arrangements, and capacity.
  • Alignment of the proposed interventions to national and regional priorities; with   a clearly defined results chain.
  • Demonstration of the high likelihood or commitment for downstream investment financing.
  • Extent to which the beneficiary institution would own the project intervention and sustain the results.
  • Technical competence of the beneficiary institutions related to efficiency, effectiveness and track record of executing projects of a similar nature and management of project finances.

The AWF provides grants ranging from €50,000 to €5,000,000.
