The African Water Facility Approves a Grant to Promote Citywide Inclusive Sanitation in Togo

The African Water Facility (AWF) has approved a grant of 1.25 million Euros to support the implementation of a project to promote citywide inclusive sanitation in nine urban centres in Togo.

Built on the success of the Facility’s project ‘Promotion of Innovation in Urban Sanitation’ which was implemented in Sokode, Togo from 2013 to 2018, the Promotion of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (PAICUT) project aims to achieve the sustainable development goal 6 and further enhance effective sanitation services in Sokode, as well as support the preparation of investments for citywide inclusive waste management services in Dzrekpo, Kati, Avetonou, Zogbegan, Atchangbade, Sara, Sagbibou, Biagou & Batebogou, and Boade.

Commenting on the project and approval, Mr Mtchera Chirwa, Coordinator of the African Water Facility said, “This is the second grant approved this year by the African Water Facility and is part of our strong partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support the development of urban sanitation projects in seven countries in Africa. We are happy to provide this grant to the Government of Togo through this partnership, and we look forward to the successful implementation of the project.”

The project is scheduled to commence in November 2022 and will provide investment-ready sanitation masterplans and effective sanitation services to approximately 1,050,000 people in Sokode and environs, and an additional 1,361,202 people in other identified centres where 52% are women.

The African Water Facility (AWF) was established in 2004 under the initiative of the African Minsters’ Council on Water (AMCOW), to mobilise resources to finance water resources development activities in Africa. AWF is hosted and managed by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
